99 Nights in the Forest Mammoth: Location & Ribs Guide
Where to find the Mammoth in 99 Nights in the Forest, its stats, how to kill it safely, and how to turn its rib drops into BBQ Ribs — the best food in the game.
What Is the Mammoth in 99 Nights in the Forest?
The Mammoth is the largest huntable creature in 99 Nights in the Forest, and the reason most players ever set foot in the snowy biome: it is the primary source of ribs, the best meat in the game. Unlike wolves or bears, a mammoth won't typically chase you across the map the moment it spots you, but hitting one turns it into a dangerous, high-damage fight that can end an unprepared run.
Two stronger variants exist — the Hellephant in the volcanic biome and the Mossy Mammoth in the jungle — and this guide covers how to handle all three, since the core fight is the same at heart: bring a strong weapon, manage your positioning, and survive the animal's heavy hits long enough to bring it down.
Where to Find Mammoths
Mammoths live in cold, open regions. The three variants each stick to their own biome:
The Arctic / Snowy Biome
The standard Mammoth roams the arctic/snowy biome — open, snow-covered terrain that's easy to traverse and, crucially, easy to fight in. The open ground means few obstacles to trap you, which matters enormously in this fight (more on that below). Cold is the biome's real threat: bring warm gear or plan short trips so the environment doesn't chip your health while you're mid-battle.
Volcanic and Jungle Variants
The Hellephant is found near lava flows and scorched ground in the volcanic biome, where environmental heat damage stacks on top of the fight itself. The Mossy Mammoth hides among dense jungle vegetation — its mossy coat provides camouflage, so scan for large moving shapes between the trees. Both variants drop ribs like the standard Mammoth and are worth hunting once your gear is strong enough to make the fights efficient.
Practical scouting tips:
- Mammoths are huge and hard to miss in the open snow — circle the biome's edges first to spot one without committing
- Mark the location on your map; a mammoth you can't re-find is a wasted trip
- If you're hunting for multiple rib trips, note that spawns are not infinite — based on community reports, respawn timers are fairly long, so rotate between biomes if your regular target is gone
Mammoth Stats
Exact values shift with game updates, but based on community testing, the mammoth's profile looks roughly like this:
The key numbers to internalize: it hits hard enough to kill quickly and it is slow. Every strategy below exploits the speed gap between you and a multi-ton animal.
How to Get Ribs From a Mammoth
Ribs drop guaranteed from any successful mammoth kill — standard, Hellephant, or Mossy. You cannot find ribs in chests, buy them, or grow them; hunting is the only source. Kill one, collect the ribs from its drops, and cook them before eating: raw meat restores far less and can leave you food-poisoned.
Raw ribs are already a great food item, but they become the single best consumable in the game when cooked into BBQ Ribs at the Chef's Station. We cover the full recipe chain, station requirements, and why BBQ Ribs are worth the extra step in the ribs guide.
Best Weapons for the Fight
You need damage output that ends the fight fast, because every second the mammoth is alive is a second it can hit you. From the weapon progression in our weapons guide, here's how the tiers stack up for this specific fight:
Whatever you bring, the rule is the same: your weapon needs to threaten a kill within a few exchanges, or the mammoth's damage output wins the war of attrition.
Safe Kill Strategy: Step by Step
The mammoth fight is a positioning puzzle, not a damage race. Follow this sequence to take one down with minimal risk:
- Prepare before traveling. Full health, strong armor, your best weapon, and a few healing food items in case a hit lands.
- Aggro carefully. Land the first hit, then immediately be ready to move — the mammoth will charge.
- Kite, don't trade. When it charges, sidestep or sprint perpendicular to its path. Never stand still to trade hits; its damage per hit is far higher than yours.
- Hit after the charge misses. The moment the charge ends and it turns around, step in for one or two hits, then reset distance. This is the core loop of the whole fight.
- Watch the terrain. Open snow is your friend. Avoid fighting near trees, rocks, or biome edges where you can get cornered. Getting trapped against an obstacle is the most common way this fight goes wrong.
- Beware the ice lakes. Based on community reports, slipping on frozen lakes mid-kite is a real hazard in the arctic — it breaks your movement rhythm at the worst moment. Either lure the mammoth away from the ice or fight well clear of it.
- Finish and loot fast. Collect the rib drop, then get somewhere safe to cook — the cold biome punishes lingering.
Co-op Hunting
A team makes this fight dramatically easier: one player tanks the mammoth's attention while the other deals damage from a flank. Rotate the tanking role when the aggro'd player takes a hit. A two-player team can reliably kill mammoths one weapon tier earlier than a solo player can. See the multiplayer setup in our co-op coverage for team roles.
Common Mistakes
Is Hunting Mammoths Worth It?
Yes — for the food economy, it's the single best investment in the game. A cooked batch of BBQ Ribs carries you through the late-game nights where food pressure peaks, and the trip becomes trivially repeatable once you've done it twice. The mid-game moment where you kill your first mammoth is usually the moment your run stops being fragile.
For the full cooking chain, see the ribs guide. If you're deciding between weapon upgrades specifically for this fight, the weapons guide ranks the options. And if a bear ambushes you on the way through the forest, the bear guide covers that fight separately — mammoth tactics do transfer, but bears are faster and chase harder.
